Cooper received an honorable mention for his LA Weekly signed commentary, "East Versus West." He also won a second place columnist award for his work with the LA Weekly.

"If you've got to come in second place, I can't think of a better person to lose to than to (Los Angeles Times columnist) Steve Lopez," said Cooper, who won the Press Club's 2000 Journalist of the Year award. "He deserved this year's award and I'm happy he won it."

Buckley's newscast won first place in the talk/public affairs category and second place in the newscast category.
