Application

Applications for the 2011 Institute are no longer being accepted, deadline passed as of March 29, 2011.  Email neainst@usc.edu to request to be added to our mailing list for future updates.

Application materials are only accepted through an online application form, we do not accept any mailed materials.

Important! If you have applied in previous years, you are still required to submit a complete electronic application. Past applicants are not automatically rolled over into the 2012 applicant pool.

Requirements for Eligibility

  • Candidates must be arts writers, critics, editors or producers for online, print, radio or television.
  • Applicants must show that theater is an area of strong professional interest, that they have made theater coverage part of their regular beat, or that they have supervised journalistic coverage of this field for the past two years.
  • Participants will be expected to have at least two years of professional journalism experience.
  • The fellowship is NOT intended for entry-level journalists, students or journalism educators.
  • Advanced degrees or specialized training in the arts are NOT required.
  • Freelancers with a significant body of work are eligible, if their application is accompanied by a letter of recommendation from an editor/manager at an organization that regularly publishes or broadcasts their work or by an experienced journalist who can speak to their work in convincing detail.
  • Former NEA Institute Fellows who participated in either the Institute in Classical Music and Opera at Columbia University in New York, the Institute for Dance Criticism at the American Dance Festival in Durham, N.C. or the International Arts Journalism Institute in the Visual Arts at American University in Washington, D.C. MAY apply.
  • Former Fellows from the NEA Institute in Theater and Musical Theater at the USC Annenberg School for Communication & Journalism may NOT apply again.
  • You MAY apply if you live or work in Los Angeles or other metropolitan areas. 
  • Applicants must be US citizens or permanent residents. You are NOT eligible if you live or work outside of the United States.
