Melissa Brough is an Annenberg Fellow and doctoral candidate in Communication, a 2010-2011 Fulbright grantee to Colombia, and currently a Russell Fellow. She works in the fields of communication for social change, participatory and civic media, visual and digital media cultures, and social movements. She is writing her dissertation about participatory public culture in the digital age, based on a study of youth political and cultural engagement in Colombia. She was a 2010 Digital Media and Learning Research Associate and has collaborated with a number of youth and community media projects including Mobile Voices
and the Chiapas Media Project
. Prior to pursuing her Ph.D. she worked for four years in development communication as a Program Officer for FilmAid International
, and in documentary filmmaking. She received her B.A. in Development Studies and Modern Culture & Media from Brown University.
