Annenberg Research Seminar: Mihaela Popescu, Assistant Professor of Communication, Culture, Digital Humanities, Law and Political Economy of the Media at the Department of Communication Studies of the California State University, San Bernardino
Geoffrey Cowan Forum (Annenberg Room 207), 12 noon

Please join students and faculty for a presentation by Mihaela Popescu, Assistant Professor of Communication, Culture, Digital Humanities, Law and Political Economy of the Media at the Department of Communication Studies of the California State University, San Bernardino. Her topic: “New Literacies and Cultural Capital.”

From Professor Popescu: “Recent scholarship on the digital divide moves beyond easy dichotomies of technological access to recast inequities in digital capabilities as gradations of exclusion. This approach invites inquiry into the nature of digital literacy within a field of cultural production in which institutional action, differential uses of ICT's, public perceptions, and discourses about the value of “new literacies” intersect. I discuss the challenges of reconceptualizing digital literacy as cultural capital and the implications of this framework on current educational policies. To illustrate, I use data on cultural consumption patterns and Web 2.0 adoption in Southeast Europe as a springboard for exploring the connections between economic, social and cultural capital and effective use of digital technologies.”
