Journalism Director’s Forum: How can local news increase civic engagement in Los Angeles neighborhoods? Geoffrey Cowan Forum (Annenberg Room 207), 12 noon | |

Join School of Journalism Director
Geneva Overholser for a conversation with Alhambra Source Editor
Daniela Gerson about USC Annenberg’s newly launched Civic Engagement and Journalism Initiative. The project works with Communication researchers from the
Metamorphosis Project and journalists from Annenberg’s local news sites:
Alhambra Source and
Intersections South LA. Each site is developed independently, but both share similar missions of improving community engagement via thoughtful journalism. The initiative aims to consolidate existing projects, add value through increased collaboration, and expand the research impact. The discussion will include background into the sites and the communities they serve, how scholars study civic engagement and its connection with local media, and an upcoming project to engage young adults reporting on their own communities. Gerson will be joined by representatives from the Metamorphosis project, Intersections South LA, Boyle Heights Beat, as well as Alhambra Source community contributors.
