Opening Up Journalism: A Culture Change
National Press Club Holeman Lounge, 529 14th Street NW, Washington, D.C. 20045, 5 p.m. panel discussion, 6 p.m. reception

Transparency and the ideals of service and community connection have long characterized quality journalism. Digital communication and web technology offer opportunities for new practices, innovation and greater citizen participation in journalism.

"The Case for Open Journalism Now," a new report written by executive-in-residence Melanie Sill, proposes a new framework and recommendations for open journalism to reorder the day-to-day work of journalists, restoring trust and accountability to journalism. The report also examines how open-source architectures and cultures can inform and help re-imagine journalism.

In this panel discussion, Ms. Sill joins Nikki Usher (Ph.D. Communication '11), a professor at George Washington University's School of Media and Public Affairs, to explore the issues raised in her report. Journalism School director Geneva Overholser moderates.

A reception follows the discussion.
