Gary Gumpert &
Susan Drucker. Drucker is a professor in the Department of Journalism/ Media Studies, School of Communication, Hofstra University. She is an attorney, editor of the Free Speech Yearbook, and series editor of the Communication and Law series for Hampton Press. Gumpert is emeritus professor of communication at Queens College of the City University of New York and co-founder of Communication Landscapers, a consulting firm. From their abstract: "The technological infrastructure required for a wireless environment is receiving the attention of planners and urban developers who view Wi-Fi as a device to attract commerce and individual users back to the city – that such an innovation might serve as a tool for urban renewal in which cities offer free wireless access to downtown areas and provide some a means of reconciling community and 21st century urban/technological developments ... Today the citizen is measured by his/her connection or affiliation with multiple communities. The digital divide has been replaced, in part, by a community divide. We will explore how increased mobility, whether through human contact or mediated presence, facilitates the redirection of the community impulse transcending the traditional urban impulse."
