Who is eligible for this program?

All mid-career critics, reporters, writers, columnists, editors, broadcasters or producers who specialize in arts, culture or entertainment for or a newspaper, magazine, broadcast or online media organization may apply. By mid-career, we mean: You must have at least three years of steady professional arts journalism in your background; your work examples for this application must have been published or produced between May 2007 and June 2008.

This program is NOT intended for entry-level journalists, students or journalism educators. Staff, freelancers and self-employed journalists ARE welcome.

Ideally, you have already brought distinction to the arts/culture/entertainment field at large or within your media organization and community. You are perhaps recognized for arts journalism leadership by having expanded the beat or innovated a form of coverage or discovered new subject material or by simply practicing good journalism.

There is no substitute for good journalism.

If you have already participated in a USC Annenberg/Getty Fellowship, you may NOT apply. But we welcome past applicants.

This is a NATIONAL and INTERNATIONAL program. You MAY apply if you live or work within or outside of the United States.
This is a rigorous, strenuous, jam-packed and fun fellowship program and it is strongly advised to be physically prepared for long days. Get rest in advance and drink plenty of water on the program.

Please Note: We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, national or international origin, color, sex, age, veteran status, or disability. It is our intention that all qualified applications be given equal opportunity and that our selection is based upon merit alone.

What if I am a freelance journalist and/or am self-employed?

Freelancers and/or self-employed individuals, who regularly publish online or in print or over the airwaves and are able to demonstrate a significant body of work in the past 12 months are eligible -- as long as their application is accompanied by a letter of recommendation by a newsroom editor/manager at an organization that regularly publishes or broadcasts their work OR by an experienced journalist who can speak to their work in convincing detail.

For example, if you created your own arts/culture/entertainment Website, ask someone respected in the field to write on your behalf, addressing specifically how they use your site and depend upon it for valuable, competent and reliable news, insight and information.

What should I do to prepare for the program?

Once you have been accepted, we will be in contact with you about the program’s details and requirements. It is important for fellows to clear their desks at work and home before coming. We cannot emphasize enough that there is no time to complete assignments or take on new ones while you are on the fellowship.

If you are a freelancer, you should plan accordingly and prepare not to be making an income during the three weeks.

Alert colleagues, family members and friends that your time to be in touch with them or accomplish work for them will be minimal. Be assured that the fellowship’s rewards with respect to story ideas, contacts, job opportunities and essential rejuvenation are worth it in the long run. Tell them the same.

There will likely be reading material given to you in advance of the fellowship to enhance your experience here. You will not, however, receive an actual schedule of events until you arrive.

This is a rigorous, strenuous, jam-packed and fun fellowship program and it is strongly advised to be physically prepared for long days. Get rest in advance and drink plenty of water on the program.

What mandatory obligations must I and/or my editor or boss fulfill during or post fellowship?

Fellows must agree to attend all USC Annenberg/Getty Fellowship events.

Fellows must also participate in an exit evaluation/interview and complete a follow-up survey three to six months post fellowship. Their editors or bosses, should they have them, will likewise be surveyed three to six months post fellowship.

When will I receive the schedule for the Fellowship?

Schedules are given upon arrival.  Fellows will, however, be told in advance which three-day weekend is off so that they can plan accordingly for visitors or independent side trips.

How long is the program, is there time off?

The USC Annenberg/Getty Arts Journalism Program is a three week fellowship. There are five to six days off during which fellows are free to make independent plans. Usually there is one three-day weekend that is free. Although fellows will not receive a schedule of fellowship events until they arrive, they will know in advance about the three-day weekend so that they can plan accordingly.

There is some free time during the fellowship days, but usually not much. Get plenty of rest before you come.

Will I be able to work during the program?

The USC Annenberg/Getty Arts Journalism Program is fast-paced, intense and demanding. Be prepared to give 100% to the program. It is important for fellows to clear their desks at work and home before coming. We cannot emphasize enough that there is no time to complete assignments or take on new ones while you are on the fellowship.

If you are a freelancer, you should plan accordingly and prepare not to be making an income during the three weeks. (Each fellow receives a $500 stipend for expenses on days off.)

Alert colleagues, family members and friends that your time to be in touch with them or accomplish work for them will be minimal. Be assured that the fellowship’s rewards with respect to story ideas, contacts, job opportunities and essential rejuvenation are worth it in the long run.

Assure your editors or bosses or colleagues, as well, that the fellowship’s 21 days will also reap them multiple rewards.

Will I receive a stipend?

Yes. Fellows receive a $500 stipend designed mostly to carry them through the five to six days off, should they want to return to some of the sites we have already seen or re-connect with the experts we have met.

What expenses will I have to cover?

The USC Annenberg/Getty Arts Journalism Program covers most expenses, including: roundtrip travel to and from Los Angeles, hotel, most meals, reading materials, Internet access in your hotel room and transportation within Los Angeles.

Personal expenses NOT related to the program are your responsibility. These may include laundry, gifts, mini-bar, phone calls, non-Fellowship travel and anything incurred outside the dates of the program, should you decide to stay in the hotel longer, for example.

You will have five to six days off. On these days, your meals and transportation are your own to cover. Your hotel is paid for by the USC Annenberg/Getty throughout your stay.

Expenses incurred that ARE related to the program will be reimbursed. Be aware that all reimbursement requests are submitted at the end of the program and must be reviewed and approved before payment. More details on the reimbursement process are given during the fellowship.

Do I need to make my own travel arrangements?

No. Our program coordinator will be in touch with the fellows about travel to and from Los Angeles. Flights should NOT be purchased by the fellows independently unless discussed with the program coordinator beforehand.

Do I need a passport and/or visa?

Passports are required for all foreign travel to and from the United States.  If you are a U.S. citizen, no visa is required.

All non-U.S. citizens will more than likely need to acquire a nonimmigrant visa; however, certain countries may be exempt.  Please check the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Website to familiarize yourself with information about travel to the United States from your country.   The fellowship’s program coordinator manages all travel arrangements and will be in touch with international fellows to discuss travel and university policies regarding visas.

Can I arrive before or stay after the dates of the fellowship?

Yes.  Fellows may arrive before and/or leave after the fellowship officially begins.  If planning to stay in the Hollywood Celebrity Hotel for dates outside the fellowship, you will need to let us know well in advance.  Make sure to contact our program coordinator with the details of your trip.

Where will I live?

Fellows have their own room with a kitchenette and living room area at the Hollywood Celebrity Hotel in Hollywood, California.  Be advised that while there is no pool at the hotel, there is a modest fitness center and complimentary continental breakfast offered.

The hotel is close to the Red Line Metro Station, Kodak Theatre, Grauman’s Chinese Theatre as well as other Hollywood attractions, including a weekly Farmer’s Market.

Will I need a car?

No.  All transportation in Los Angeles is provided for the fellowship – except during days off. Rental cars and personal vehicles for activities outside the program’s schedule are optional and are the independent responsibility of each fellow.
