LOS ANGELES, February 27, 2006—Geoffrey Cowan, dean of the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Southern California made the following statement about Otis Chandler, former publisher of the Los Angeles Times:

"Otis Chandler was a champion of great journalism who transformed the Los Angeles Times into one of the most important newspapers of our time. He cared deeply about Los Angeles and knew that a community evolving as rapidly as ours needed the unblinking eye of a strong newspaper to record, inform, and educate this region and the world about the frontiers of politics, technology, culture, and commerce being explored in Southern California."

"It was fitting in January 2000 at the dawn of this new century that we honored Otis Chandler, a visionary leader for Los Angeles, for journalism, and for our nation, with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the USC Annenberg School. He will be missed deeply, but left a legacy of excellence and responsible leadership to inspire generations of students, journalists, business and community leaders to come."
