LOS ANGELES--Classmates and friends of Art Buchwald will join students, faculty and alumni at the USC Annenberg School for Communication on Thursday, March 29, 2007 to remember the Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist and USC alumnus who passed away in January.
The program will begin at 12 noon in Room 207 of the USC Annenberg School, 3502 Watt Way, Los Angeles, Ca. 90089. Members of the public are welcome to attend.
Buchwald studied journalism at USC in the late 1940s and was a columnist for the Daily Trojan. USC honored him with an honorary doctorate in 1993.
“Art Buchwald was a dear friend and a tremendous supporter of students at the USC Annenberg School,” said USC Annenberg School Dean Geoffrey Cowan. “He was an exceptional journalist whose insight into national and international affairs was both illuminating and entertaining. During my several visits with him over the past year, he was always surrounded by friends, celebrating every day of his miraculous life. He even used his unique situation to make a “last wish” to get two students admitted to USC. His work, his wit and his life serves as a great inspiration that will remain with us for generations to come.”
On March 29, USC Annenberg will also announce the 2007 winner of the Buchwald Scholarship. The scholarship is awarded annually around April 1 to a student selected for humor writing. According to Buchwald, the winning student "should be anti-establishment and contemptuous of the scholarship he or she is receiving ... If the person is on probation for something that he or she wrote, that should be considered a plus."
Located in Los Angeles at the University of Southern California, the USC Annenberg School for Communication is among the nation’s leading institutions devoted to the study of journalism and communication, and their impact on politics, culture and society. With an enrollment of more than 1,900 graduate and undergraduate students, USC Annenberg offers degree programs in journalism, communication, public diplomacy and public relations.
